QUALIFICATIONS:

Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Idaho or ability to obtain/maintain required licensure. Two years’ experience in infection control, healthcare epidemiology, employee health, nursing, or a related field required. Knowledge of Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resource Services Administration, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Centers for Disease Control, and Occupational Safety Health Association's policies or guidelines. This knowledge will enable the Infection Preventionist to ensure infection prevention practices meet the requirements of the above agencies. Knowledge of public health principles, including surveillance and prevention of acquired infections. Knowledge of professional nursing principles, practices and procedures. Must complete cross-training and maintain competency in applicable Nursing Department functions. Knowledge of regulatory agency standards on Infection Prevention issues, including AAAHC Standards, CDC Guidelines, AAMI Guidelines and Nursing Professional recommendations from organizations. Annual training and continued education in infection control required. Knowledge of principles of epidemiology, utilization of scientific methods, and application of basic statistical concepts for research methodology including design, data collection, and analysis required for interpreting current research articles on infection prevention issues. Knowledge of and skills to apply principles of interpersonal relationships, communication, and group dynamics in working with individuals and groups toward establishing standards and planning for corrective actions. Knowledge of and skill in applying management principles, including management by objectives to affect change and improvement clinical practice. Knowledge of educational and training principles, techniques and practices related to planning, development, implementation and evaluation of infection control in-services, annual infection prevention training, and new employee orientation programs. Ability to communicate, verbally and in writing, to conduct presentations and prepare written reports. BLS certification required. ACLS and PALS required within 6 months of hire. APIC Infection Control and Prevention Training Completion required within 6 months of hire. Proficient in typing and Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or similar platforms. Valid driver’s license required.

  • Work is typically performed in an adequately lighted and climate-controlled office within the facility.

  • Occasional travel is required and some investigations may require fieldwork.

  • May be exposed to communicable diseases and illnesses because of direct contact with numerous people in a healthcare environment and generally because of the nature of the required work


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serve as a resource for all departments regarding infection prevention and control practices.

  • Oversee the annual maintenance and implementation of the Infection Control Plan and Exposure Control Plan.

  • Maintain compliance with CDC guidelines and applicable federal, state, tribal, and regulatory requirements, including requirements related to tuberculosis, AAAHC, CMS, and OSHA.

  • Provides current information from government/private organizations, i.e., AAAHC, CDC,

  • OSHA, etc., on standards that relate to infection prevention and implement those changes.

  • Monitor compliance with infection prevention policies, procedures, and standards.

  • Identify opportunities for improvement and collaborate with leadership to implement corrective actions.

  • Provides leadership and oversight of the ICRA (Infection Control Risk Assessment) before, during, and after minor and major construction projects in occupied spaces, to assure appropriate infection control measures are in place.

  • Participate in quality improvement activities related to infection prevention and patient and employee safety.

  • Networks with other Infection Preventionist through the Association of Professionals in Infection Control (APIC).

  • Monitor and investigate potential infection exposures or outbreaks among staff and patients.

  • Consults with the Laboratory Department on any presumptive or confirmed antibiotic-resistant organisms, and/or any other organism of epidemiologic importance. Advises health care providers as to appropriate isolation techniques and treatment given.

  • Conduct infection surveillance and epidemiologic investigations as appropriate.

  • Assists the Medical and Dental department with development and monitoring of sterilization and disinfection processes. Determines the effectiveness of their procedures used to control cross contamination and provides compliance monitoring

  • Assists Environmental Services supervisor with the development and monitoring of facility contracts for linen, infectious waste, and other housekeeping issues as they relate to infection prevention. Determines the effectiveness of their procedures used to control cross contamination. Consults with other disciplines concerning disinfection and sterilization procedures and compliance monitoring.

  • Participate in the planning of building and capital works redesign processes, waste management and environmental cleaning.

  • Ensure accurate and timely reporting of communicable diseases to applicable state and regulatory agencies.

  • Track trends in infection data and identify opportunities for risk reduction.

  • Maintain appropriate infection prevention and surveillance records.

  • Provide quarterly updates to the QI Manager for inclusion in Health Board reports.

  • Assist with investigations, documentation, follow-up, and mitigation of infection-related events

  • Educate all staff on infection prevention and control principles, including standard and transmission-based precautions.

  • Ensure employees receive training on hand hygiene, PPE use, sharps safety, respiratory hygiene, and disease-specific precautions.

  • Coordinate with HR and QI to include infection control training in new employee orientation.

  • Provide ongoing education based on identified risks, trends, exposures, and regulatory requirements.

  • Maintain documentation of required infection prevention education and training

  • Identify infection risks associated with staff job duties and implement appropriate prevention measures.

  • Provide guidance during infectious disease outbreaks, exposures, pandemics, or other emergent situations.

  • Collaborate with Nursing Manager, Lab Manager, and Tribal Environmental Health Specialist regarding infection prevention and response.

  • Collaborate with the Safety Officer and Emergency Preparedness teams during drills and emergency events.

  • Assist with development and implementation of outbreak response plans and mitigation strategies.

  • Present infection trends, risk assessments, surveillance data, and prevention strategies at applicable committee meetings.

  • Coordinate with clinical leadership to implement infection control improvements based on committee findings.

  • Participate in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives as assigned

  • Manages and directs the Employee Health Program, which includes disease

  • detection and prevention; follow-up on employee illnesses and injuries and return-to-work processes and coordinate modified duty or medical leave processes as appropriate; conduct and promote a safe work environment

  • Conduct employee and pre-employment health screenings/ attend new employee orientation.

  • Coordinate and administer employee immunizations, TB testing, and annual N95 fit testing.

  • Initiates or participates in the review and improvement of work methods to achieve optimum productivity.

  • Assures Employee Health Program policies and procedures are current per the guidance of the CDC, ACIP (Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices), OSHA, and AAAHC accreditation standards.

  • Establishes, maintains, and secures Employee Health Records per established OSHA standards for the purpose of documentation of Healthcare Workers immunization (TB/MMR, etc.) and screening status and for the purpose of documentation of blood borne pathogen (BBP) exposure incidents and BBP management follow-up.

  • Provides initial and annual BBP Exposure training in accordance with OSHA guidelines for employee BBP training.

  • Manages and implements the Respiratory Protection Program (RPP)/N-95 through direct provision of RPP documentation for medical clearance for respirator use status, initial and annual respiratory protection training, fit testing status, and service area rosters of staff RPP status.

  • Identifies training and development needs of staff and makes recommendations.

  • Maintains knowledge and competency within the Employee Health program requirements to maintain continuity of the Infection Prevention and Control Program.

  • Implements, maintains, and evaluates data, information systems and processes to meet regulatory requirements for infection control and employee health

  • Maintain accurate, confidential employee health records/database in accordance with HIPAA and applicable laws and regulations.

  • Provide education and resources related to occupational health, wellness, infection prevention, and workplace safety.

  • Plan and coordinate the annual COVID-19 and influenza vaccine clinic for Marimn Health employees.

  • Coordinate and assist COVID-19 and influenza vaccine clinics for Tribal entities.

  • Collaborate with Clinical Leadership and Human Resources during outbreaks, exposures, pandemics, and other employee health events.

  • The Registered Nurse /Infection Control and Employee Health Coordinator will be cross trained within the Nursing Department to provide clinical support and nursing coverage when operational needs require additional staffing. Cross training is intended to promote continuity of patient care and provide flexibility during periods of short staffing, unexpected employee absences, increased patient volume, emergencies, or other circumstances that create a need for additional nursing support.

  • When assigned to Nursing Department coverage, responsibilities may include:

  • Provide direct patient care within the RN’s scope of practice, licensure, training, and demonstrated competency.

  • Assist with nursing assessments, triage, patient education, care coordination, and other appropriate nursing functions.

  • Assist the Nursing Department with routine clinical operations and patient flow.

  • Administer medications and treatments in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, provider orders, and scope of practice.

  • Assist with patient monitoring, documentation, and follow-up.

  • Provide coverage for nursing staff during scheduled or unscheduled absences when assigned.

  • Respond to urgent or emergent clinical situations within the RN’s training and competency.

  • Collaborate with providers, nursing staff, and other members of the healthcare team to ensure safe and effective patient care.

  • Maintain competency in required Nursing Department functions through orientation, cross-training, education, and periodic competency assessment.

  • Follow all applicable nursing policies, procedures, standards of care, and regulatory requirements while providing cross-coverage.

  • Cross-training and Nursing Department coverage will be coordinated with the Nursing Manager or designated Clinical Leadership

  • Major Responsibilities. Does not need to include everything throughout the day.
